Five Thousand Years
Lee Evans
Exquisite the jewels
Of five thousand years,
Displayed here for posterity.
That sparkling Iris sapphire brooch,
Bracelets of golden snakes entwined,
Necklaces dangling with scarabs:
Oh my love, I gaze and I gaze,
Admiring the craftsmanship,
Speechless with their beauty—
While all whom they adorned
Settle as dust upon glass cases,
And my mind settles on you.
